Though known primarily for the freak show going on inside the building, the outside of the Ripley's Believe It Or Not Odditorium deserves some recognition, as well.

Looking beyond the giant fake tyrannosaurus rex poking through the roof, what we encounter is a variety of architectural styles. The basic form is classic Southern California, with its Mediterranean-inspired roof tiles rimming the top of a low-slung building. The facade has been decorated in fake columns with fake embellishments in colors reminiscent of those fake Egyptian scenes we've seen in so many old movies. Between the columns are posters touting the wonders inside.

The combination of the garish and the historic; the appropriate, and the outlandish is perfectly suitable for its location -- Hollywood. The whole building feels like a time capsule from the 1920's, when there was still much of the world to be explored, and film cameras turned directors' visions of what exotic locations might look like into a visual record of how America saw the world.
